Dec 01/12: Regeensburg & Sickness

Today we were in the Black Forest area in Regensburg. As usual we went to the Christmas market. Had some great white Ghuwein - yum. We had fresh roasted chestnuts - for the first time - they were tasty, but juicy and dry at the same time, if you know what I mean. Very 'meaty'. I was going to have some lebkuchen (they are huge - size of a dinner plate!!!) but had my heart set on having the 'marzipan' flavor, and could not find any, so am hoping to find it in Nuremburg tomorrow. Nuremburg is supposed to be the grand-daddy of all Christmas markets. Looking forward to it.

Dad has been sick in bed with a flu for 3 days - today is the first day he has been up and out of his room. The maƮtre D actually delivered some dinner to his room last night & the day before. Dad slept a lot, now he is feeling all recovered and back to his usual self - being a pest.

I have been to every market & on every one of the excursions. They have been great! Lots of walking every day, so hopefully I am working off all that good food that they are serving. I had a sore throat & earache for 2 days but I think I have avoided the flu that is going around - a lot of people on the ship are hacking & coughing.

It snowed today!!!! for at least 5 minutes, then it all melted again. Later on the sun even came out. It is getting much colder as we go north - today it was between -2 & -11 C. I'm glad I brought my long coat.

I've done laundry twice ( in the sink) so far. Dad has a big garbage bag full of dirty clothes... has not done anything. We can only wash out 2 things at a time because we have to hang them up in the shower to dry for a day.

We are getting quite a mug collection... hope we have room in the luggage for all of them. May have to upgrade to business class on the way back if they have another special - just so can check a second bag with them all - and we are only half way!!!
The places we are going to are all very medieval and gothic - Carl, you would like them a lot. We had small ' bratwursts' today in the oldest wurst cookery in all of Germany (or Europe, not sure which) . We had sauerkraut, sweet mustard and a crusty hard bun. Delish. We have been taking lots of pictures - around 3-400 a day if you can believe that. Lots of the markets- of course, pictures from the town tours we go on every day. When we sail in the daytime have many of the scenery along the way, have seen lots of castles, and will be seeing more as we progress.
Well, it's getting late and have to get some rest so we can get up and go tomorrow.
Hope all is well. Miss you all. Talk to you again soon. (sporadic connections on internet as we travel down the rivers)

PS- Paul the water is turned off at the main in the basement ( in the closet) in the house, in case you try to use some....
