Dec 07/12: Kinderjynk & Amserdam‏

Well, we have arrived in Amsterdam  tonight at 11PM where we will be leaving for our plane ride home tomorrow after breakfast. Today it snowed all day. The Amsterdam airport apparently closed due to a huge snowstorm there and many flights were cancelled or delayed. We were worried about spending lots of time in the airport tomorrow, also so when we had the chance  we were able to upgrade our seats to business class. That way if there is a long delay we can at least wait in the KLM lounge and will have someplace to sit, have snacks, and use the toilet for free.

On our way here we stopped to visit some windmills at the small town of Kinderjynk. I forgot how tiny they were on the inside, but still cozy. That was our last stop for the cruise. Nothing much else to report. We are still packing.. hope everything fits and we are not overweight. At least now with the upgrade we can have a bit more weight. As we pack we are watching  "We Bought a Zoo" on the TV. Dad is passed out on the bed, and he is not quite finished packing either. It`s 1.30 am, so I`m signing off and going to finish packing. Bags have to be out in front of cabin by 8.30 and we leave for the airport at 10.30. Our plane leaves at 1.30, if all goes well, and we`ll see what happens form there.

Take care. We will be home late tomorrow. Plan to sleep in Sunday.

Hope all is well... anxious to get home now and see you all.

Love ,

Posterity Post: Dads Football Pics!

(Sent December 01 / 2012...)

Have tried to send but not sure if successful. So am sending again. The winners are:

Chicago Bears
Houston Texans
New England Patriots
Buffalo Bills
Detroit Lions
Kansas City Chiefs
New York Jets
San Francisco 49'ers
Green Bay Packers
Denver Broncos
Baltimore Ravens
Cincinnati Bengals
Dallas Cowboys
New York Giants
Cleveland Browns at Oakland Raiders is a BOX

Note that I have changed a pick because a Kansas City player just killed his girlfriend and then killed himself right outside the football stadium so I think the Chiefs will be playing on pure emotion for their team mate which has increased their chances to win. Very unfortunate situation but football is a game of emotion as well as talent at the NFL level. The Chiefs will be raging.

Good luck

Dec 06/12: Cologne, Braubach, Castles

Hi,

Hope all is well in your part of the world.

Well, yesterday we finally made it to the Rhine River in the late afternoon.

I guess you could call yesterday 'castle day'. Lots of castles along the way (18-20, including the statue of the Lorelei)  as we came upstream the Main River all morning and early afternoon after lunch, until it joined the Rhine at Koblenz where we docked for the night. Along the way we stopped at Braubach after lunch at 1.30 and visited a medieval castle which was fascinating. Boys, I don't know if you could have fit the stairways going straight on, they were that narrow, and steep to boot. We saw the wine cellars- did you know that in medieval times they couldn't drink the water because it was infested with germs etc, so instead they drank low volume alcohol instead (bier), even the kids. Better to be buzzed than get sick. Anyway, they also drank wine, and it has just been proven that their belief of drinking white with fish and red with meat to kill any infected fish or meat or spoilage is actually true. There is something in the white and red wines that helps to ' disinfect' the fish & meat. So that is where white with fish and red with meat came from. Dad was very fascinated with the whole castle tour. Anyway, I have lots of castle pics to show you when we get back.

The internet has been really spotty and today we are parked beside a bridge which is apparently blocking our signals so no internet. Will have to send this from Amsterdam tomorrow. With all the internet glitches you may get these after we are back!

Anyway, yesterday was another rainy day, all day. later on in the evening it poured. Our coats were all wet, even though it did not go through, AND we had an umbrella.

So let me  get you up to date....

Braubach - only did the tour of Marksburg Castle, inside & out. It is the best preserved medieval castle on the river, and was never conquered or destroyed in all these 800 years, partially because it located on a very steep isolated hilltop.  Then onto the bus to drive for about 1/2 hour to meet the ship in Koblenz where it was waiting for us - by now it was around 4 PM.  The bus did not go all the way back to the ship but dropped us off about 10 minute walk away, so we walked into the town because we wanted to see things before it got completely dark.

We went to the 'old' part of town and found the Christmas market (of course). Bought another mug and had some ghluwein, of course. Shared at 0.5m bratwurst on a bun - it was good.  Then wandered around a bit and came back to where the ship was docked. It was right where the 2 rivers converge, called "the German corner - Deutche Ecke" . By now it was totally dark, so we could not really get pictures anymore, but we tried as there was this huge statue of King? On a horse surrounded by 'fake' coliseum behind him with all the crests of the German states. In front  it was like a piece of pie lined with flags on each side with the narrow  tip pointing into the rivers, one on each side, Main and Rhine, then flowing together at the 'tip'. Dad and I probably spent around 45 minutes trying to get pictures, until Dad got fed up and went to the ship. I stubbornly stayed out longer and did get some pictures, but most of them did not turn out, especially the ones of the rivers that I wanted to  use to show how the rivers converged. Oh. well. We were really wet when we came in, and had to hang up coats up to dry on the back of our door all night.

Got back on board to realize that it was 'Captain's  Cocktail and dinner"  that night, so had to rush to change out of day clothes into  'ship' clothes. Didn't even have time to put on makeup or anything, as it was already 6.40 and it had started at 6.30. Then dinner at 7.00-  I had lobster thermador and Dad had filet mignon. We were very tired so then Dad got ready for bed and I stayed up downloading pictures of the day and frustrating myself trying to see if I could salvage them or they had to be ' dumped'. Lots  of the late evening ones got dumped.  We watched a movie on the TV while we were doing this. Dad fell asleep, but i stayed up until 4 AM. This was a mistake as had to get up today as shore excursion of Cologne started at 9.15 am.

Also put our shoes out last night as SinterKlaus might come by in the night and leave us something sweet, according to tradition.

So, today - Cologne... This morning there was a chocolate Santa and bar of marzipan in the shoes for us. Sinterklaus DID come. I guess we were a good little boy and girl after all.

The weather -  it didn't rain !!! The sun even came out for a little while. Still coolish -2C, but comfortable.

Guided walk through the 'old' town ending at the Cologne Cathedral around 11.30. Spent a lot of the  time inside the Cathedral with the guide - took lots of pics - it is huge!!!! Apparently has the largest façade (or something , not sure anymore) of any one in Europe. Fascinating.

Then Dad claims I spent an hour going to the public bathroom ( they cost .50 E to get in- it's like the metro- you put your money in and enter via turnstile) - as usual there was a long lineup at the ladies, and then when I got in I had to remove my fannypack, camera case, outer clothes etc.

On the way back we stopped at 2 Christmas markets . I liked the second one better because it seemed  more traditional in that it had little painted street signs, small elves and gnomes all over, and was nicely decorated. Somehow more 'fairytaleish', if you know what I mean.  Bought the mug of course... and then Dad got fed up and went back to the ship by himself, leaving me to wander around. He had to go the bathroom and besides wanted to have lunch on board. I wandered and then bought a "Weinanchtes Wurst"- it was a mix of blutwurst, fried onions, apples, and regular sausage meat which they cooked up the huge grill and put on a bun. I had them wrap it up in aluminum foil so I could take it home and share it with Dad. Also bought a Landjaegerwurst- like dried pepperette but larger, which I also brought back to share with Dad.

When I got back to the ship it was around 2.20 and I had missed lunch, so I just went up and they let me have a beer. I drank the whole thing while sharing my sausages with Dad, who had eaten lunch already so didn't need a real meal. Dad says that is the most beer I've had in over 5 years.  That worked for me. I was tired,( I think the beer did it !) but we decided that we would walk down to the Lindt Chocolate  museum which was neat the boat. It also had a huge chocolate store in it ( surprise !), which chocolate products from other companies as well- sort of a 'chocolate showcase' you might say, including chocolate ( various varieties and mixtures, such a chili, cherry, etc) and  marzipan liquors, and all things chocolate. Of course, there were a million boxes of chocolates and holiday figures etc. Thought about bringing some stuff back, but our suitcases are really out of packing space and we have to watch the weight also, so in the end didn't buy anything.
There was another Christmas market there also, so wandered around it also. Strangely the lebkuchen are no more- I guess they end at Nuremburg, which is like ' lebkuchen headquarters'. It was dark by now, and we were tired, especially Dad, so we went back to the ship ( after \I took a million pictures of course).  I had a snooze and missed the 'disembarking' talk, but Dad managed to stay awake and went for both of us. Then  it was time for supper. Had a great time with some people we met- lots of laughter, funny stories etc.

So now are in the cabin. I am in my silk underwear as I write this and Dad is on the bed snoring. We were going to start packing but are too tired, so will have to do it tomorrow as it is our last day Sad smile emoticon. The cruise has flown by. I think we will probably go to bed once I am finished drafting this email- it is now 11.15pm, and the boat has left the dock  bound for our last stop, Kinderjdijk in Holland. It is along drive, and we should arrive there around 1.30, just after lunch is over. There is a walking tour planned for 1.45-2.30, then the rest of  the time we need to get ready for leaving on the plane. Will have to check on electronically, but can't print the boarding passes. Would like to see if there is a last minute upgrade also....

Oh, BTW- Dad broke the toilet today. Not permanently, thank heaven, but we did end up having the chief engineer come to fix it. (This is not as bad as it sounds as there are only 2 engineers on board ship, and they take care of all those sorts of things). It took him less than 3 minutes to fix it, so no big deal really, I guess, but for a while there we were worried. At one point thought it would flood, and  it wouldn't stop 'whining'... so you see Omi, now you can say you and Phil broke a toilet!
On that note, I shall sign off.

Don't know if I will email tomorrow as we will be busy packing to fly out Saturday morning. I doubt it.

So, see you Sunday- just don't call early because we will be sleeping in extra late... as well as fighting jet lag and time change.

Take care everyone.

We are happy to be coming home- missed you all.

Love Mom & Dad

Dec 06/12: Wurtzburg

A very busy day today.

Dad & I did different things. I went on the city tour and to the Christmas Market, Dad stayed by the boat and walked around the area taking pictures of birds etc.

I left for my tour at 9.30, Dad did not go out until after lunch. He went out for 2.5 hours, saw some great birds, and then met me when I was walking back in the afternoon around 3.30, (totally by accident) so we hung out taking pictures etc for about 1/2 hour and then went back to the ship.

By then I was cold as I had skipped lunch and had only eaten 2 lebkuchen at the market (but boy, are they good!!!!). Came in, I had a shower to warm up and Dad had a rest/snooze. Now he is snoring away on the bed as I write this. It is 12.06 AM here ( 6.00 pm your time). For supper I had 2 entrees, fish, and 2 desserts. I think I am driving them batty with my chai tea- I got some at the market but it is the loose kind, so I need to have the hot milk heated and hot water and honey so I can steep & mix them altogether. Today they almost go everything right, but they are trying hard. It is something new for them, and by tomorrow I'll bet they have they have it down pat.  The service, I must say, is superb, and you know I don't say that lightly!

So - again, lots to see - medieval town. Beautiful Palace - can sure see why the people were poor - they had to fund that. Very opulent. They did not let us take any pictures inside, though - wanted us to buy their postcards & souvenir booklet instead. I did not on principal as I think that is just unfair, since with flash off can take any pictures anywhere. But so be it. Then went to the ' old downtown' saw the markets, old houses, churches, etc. After our tour ended I stayed behind in the old town to visit the market. An elderly lady ( she was 80 and has 16 grandchildren!) from New Zealand tagged along and we had a very nice time. She even had some ghuwein for the first time under my encouragement! Again, there is no specific mug for this market- each stall has their own, so we made a circuit of all the stalls and I picked the one I liked best. None say 2012, although they did have a new design & color for this year compared to previous years. Went to the tourist info bureau and bought  a good booklet on the town - it has a write up of the places we went to, and some we didn't. Will probably come in handy when I go to file the 600+ pictures from today.

So after supper, there was a glass blowing demo on board. A very skilled artisan came on board and brought some samples from his shop and did a small demo, while explaining all about glass blowing. I got to come up and have a shot of Jagermeister with him, then he had me blow a small glass ball for a Christmas ornament- he even engraved it and then gave it to me. What an experience!!!  Dad was not there of course.... he was in the cabin doing????

So , now the excitement for the day comes to an end. Dad is snoring. We will get ready for bed. Frankly all this walking each day is probably really good for us... no wonder Dad is tired. It is more than he would do with Moustache in a day! How is he doing BTW, Paul ?

Otherwise, hope all is well with all of you.

Only 4 days left on the cruise- it always comes to the end too quickly.

Will try to write tomorrow. Take care,

Dec 03/12: Bamburg and Complaints about Dad

Hi all,

Today I have to complain about Phil, which he says is not fair- so there!

We are in Bamberg, and all would have been fine if Phil hadn't come this close to missing the bus for the city tour. By itself, this would not have been a problem because he would just have gotten back on the boat. However, the boat was leaving the dock and moving to another location further upriver, a town further away, where we were to have the bus meet the ship at the end of our excursion and free time in the city. So you can see the problem...

Anyway, luckily I spotted him way at the end of the peer, taking pictures of... birds. I yelled and yelled and waved  since the bus was ready to go, and finally he saw me and started to run back to the bus. He was the last one on... Really, I can't take him anywhere!

We are having a great time. it has snowed the last 2 days, but it does tend to melt in the afternoon. So today we had a tour of the hold historic city , and then a  cathedral & castle (again - there are loads of them everywhere!). Everything is medieval here. Of course, surrounding the old walled town outside it is more modern. But we are inside the old town ( think Quebec city) , so many small narrow corridors, cobblestone streets, quaint buildings, and... in this town... breweries!!!! This town has the highest concentration of breweries in and around the city then any other place in Germany. There are 2 very old  `rival` breweries  that we saw and they are side by side, across the street from each other. One is called the `Schenkla` brewery because of its owner. Apparently he was hit in the foot with a cask of beer, and it never healed correctly so he would  drag or `schenkle` his foot when he walked. They are famous for their `smoky beer` which is brewed there exclusively. The story is that one day there was a fire in the brewery and the hops and grains became `smoky` as a result. The owner was too cheap to throw them out and replace them with fresh grains, so proceeded to use them anyway and this resulted in a beer that apparently tastes like drinking  beer with BBQ sauce or as our guide said, `drinking liquid smoked ham`. We did not try it because we ran out of time, but some of the others on board did and it seems that after a few sips they said they  quite liked it.

Beer was a staple in the medieval ages because the water was too polluted to drink, so they drank beer instead - but it had a very low alcohol content, not like today!

It is very interesting hearing the history of the various houses as we go on these tours, and the time goes very fast. The walks take anywhere from 1.5-2.5 hours, so we feel we are getting our exercise.

Today our bus left the ship  at 1.20  for the town which was about a 25 minute ride. The  tour finished at  around 3.45, then until 5.20 we were on our own. I lost Phil at least a half a dozen times, and in between  he managed to behave like a `dickopf`  and made me really mad. Then he spent ages taking a million pictures of ducks by the river... he filled up his entire camera with them!
By then he complained that he was cold, hungry and had to go to the bathroom. Of course, the bathroom issue was a  sore point because I went when we visited the castle (paid my 0.50 E) and he didn`t, so now it was about an hour later, and he was a crab. Of course I didn't have to go now... and he complained that I had taken forever at the castle and he couldn`t even have 0.50E to go to the bathroom when he needed to. Meanwhile, I had wandered around while he was busy being a dickopf and found a very nice local restaurant which had cafe & kuchen for 3.90E  (a great price since just a mug of ghuwein is 3E) but, he was being a dickopf and we and an argument about going. He said he was going to stand on the street corner for 2 hours waiting for the bus in the snow  come pick him up and take him to the boat and I could just go away to the market and take pictures  because he always claims he turns around an then I am gone!

Finally, with much complaining all the way, especially about bathrooms, we went. Wasted at least half an hour with his arguing.... Anyway, when we got there, he went to the bathroom and it was free!!!! We had a great piece of chocolate-orange torte which was moist and delicious and Phil had a cup of coffee. The he was OK again. He admitted that he had never eaten lunch, so that explains a lot since he gets very crabby if he gets hungry, especially if he has to pee too! I had had a very nice lunch, so I couldn`t understand why he was so upset about everything- well, now I know, but it`s still his own fault and he shouldn't have been such a dickopf about it all.  So there !

Anyway, went to the Christmas market, and found out that this year`s mug was a boot shape - either in red or blue, so we took one in blue. I asked if there were any mugs, but the man said last year everyone wanted boots, so this year they made boots and now everyone wants mugs (like last year).

Had very little time left, so did not do any other shopping, but tomorrow is another day and we have another market to go to. The bus took about  a half hour to get to the new port where the ship was waiting for us. Then  had port talk for tomorrow, supper,  downloaded pictures (of ducks!) tried to email  you (but it didn't go so don`t know when you will actually get this...). Finally went to bed. No laundry tonight. We are tired.

(Phil said he might skip the tour of the next town tomorrow- he needs a `sea day`, and besides wants to wander about in hopes of getting more bird pictures. )

Hope all is well with you.
Will tell you more tomorrow.
Rosie & Phil

PS - are you getting  these emails ? Can you send us a note to let us know please ( a fresh note, don`t just `reply` as the file will be too big and it jams up the entire email since there is limited internet (but at least it`s free).

Dec 01/12: Regeensburg & Sickness

Today we were in the Black Forest area in Regensburg. As usual we went to the Christmas market. Had some great white Ghuwein - yum. We had fresh roasted chestnuts - for the first time - they were tasty, but juicy and dry at the same time, if you know what I mean. Very 'meaty'. I was going to have some lebkuchen (they are huge - size of a dinner plate!!!) but had my heart set on having the 'marzipan' flavor, and could not find any, so am hoping to find it in Nuremburg tomorrow. Nuremburg is supposed to be the grand-daddy of all Christmas markets. Looking forward to it.

Dad has been sick in bed with a flu for 3 days - today is the first day he has been up and out of his room. The maître D actually delivered some dinner to his room last night & the day before. Dad slept a lot, now he is feeling all recovered and back to his usual self - being a pest.

I have been to every market & on every one of the excursions. They have been great! Lots of walking every day, so hopefully I am working off all that good food that they are serving. I had a sore throat & earache for 2 days but I think I have avoided the flu that is going around - a lot of people on the ship are hacking & coughing.

It snowed today!!!! for at least 5 minutes, then it all melted again. Later on the sun even came out. It is getting much colder as we go north - today it was between -2 & -11 C. I'm glad I brought my long coat.

I've done laundry twice ( in the sink) so far. Dad has a big garbage bag full of dirty clothes... has not done anything. We can only wash out 2 things at a time because we have to hang them up in the shower to dry for a day.

We are getting quite a mug collection... hope we have room in the luggage for all of them. May have to upgrade to business class on the way back if they have another special - just so can check a second bag with them all - and we are only half way!!!
The places we are going to are all very medieval and gothic - Carl, you would like them a lot. We had small ' bratwursts' today in the oldest wurst cookery in all of Germany (or Europe, not sure which) . We had sauerkraut, sweet mustard and a crusty hard bun. Delish. We have been taking lots of pictures - around 3-400 a day if you can believe that. Lots of the markets- of course, pictures from the town tours we go on every day. When we sail in the daytime have many of the scenery along the way, have seen lots of castles, and will be seeing more as we progress.
Well, it's getting late and have to get some rest so we can get up and go tomorrow.
Hope all is well. Miss you all. Talk to you again soon. (sporadic connections on internet as we travel down the rivers)

PS- Paul the water is turned off at the main in the basement ( in the closet) in the house, in case you try to use some....

Nov 30/12: On the Danube

Good Morning from Passau in Austria,

We are still on the Danube, moored at a dock in Passau. The plan for the day is that Rosie will get off the boat and take an arranged bus tour overland while I stay on board and travel with the boat thru the series of locks along this stretch of the river. She will take land pictures and I will take river pictures throughout the day. Think it will be fun.

The weather here is similar to London at this time of the year, overcast and gloomy. It will rain before it snows at this point. Our cabin is neat, functional and very small. We could not have done our SA trip in a cabin as small as this one. We have to take turns brushing our teeth because we have difficulty both being in the washroom at the same time.

As usual I have been sick over the past few days. Head cold. Think it started in London because I began to feel raspy in my throat in Budapest on Sunday and it has become worse since then. I had supper in our cabin last night. Have used at least one full box of Kleenex and have been drinking tea with honey and lemon for 3 days. I brought pills for the stomach but not the throat. Rosie on the other hand brought a pharmacy along with her so we have been OK with treatments.

The trip has been very smooth. Hardly feel any motion and the engines are very quiet. Quite often we do not know if we are moving or not unless we are actually looking outdoors.

Carl, I will send you my football picks Friday or Saturday. I assume we did not win anything last week. Should have picked the Bears!

Take care

Phil
